From paper to practice
Between a promising paper and a working tool there’s a lot of unglamorous work: cleaning data, choosing baselines, and finding out what breaks. That’s the part I find most interesting, and the part that rarely gets written down. I find that sharing my work helps me learn faster, and helps others avoid the same mistakes. So I write about what I am learning, and I share the code I use to implement it. My goal is to make data science more accessible, and to help others build better tools for their work.
Notes from the workbench
Most of what I publish here are rebuilds and explainers: modern forecasting, causal and machine learning methods, implemented end to end, with honest use cases. Additionally, I write about civic data work and open source research.
The day job
My day-to-day work as a Senior Data Analyst involves developing a variety of data products, from telecom analytics to time-series forecasting. I also build python and SQL pipelines to automate data collection, cleaning, and analysis. My past work as a Data Scientist involved building predictive models for customer churn, and product recommendation. I have experience with a variety of data science and analytics tools, including Python, SQL, R, and PowerBI/Tableau.
Civic data & mentoring
As Data Lead at Open Austin, I run the Data Research Hub, where volunteer analysts take on questions from local community organizations and residents. I started as a data volunteer myself. Now I manage the projects and mentor the people working on them, and I’m responsible for the quality and direction of the analysis. I also teach: I lead hands-on workshops on working with city open data, and help to organize community-of-practice sessions for data professionals interested in civic tech.
